Green Party candidate takes a turn in the debates Peter Camejo adds substance, spice to gubernatorial recall debatesquotes from Peter Camejo Closing statement As the Green Party candidate, I've tried to present a solution of how to solve the crisis we now face. I've called for the fair tax to say, "Why is it we tax the poorest people the highest rates?" That's 11.3 percent, the average person 9.2 percent and the wealthiest people 7.2 percent. If we changed that, we could then put money into education. We could have a living wage, which would help end poverty in California. Democrats are destroying the budget in California. Republicans are destroying the budget in Washington, D.C. And then they attack each other and compare. The fact is Gov. Davis says you can't have Arnold; the man has no platform and he molests women. Arnold says, look at Davis--this is a disaster. Maybe they're both right. This is a race to the bottom. The Democrats in Congress voted unequivocal support for George Bush on the war on Iraq. We Greens don't support George Bush. ### "Your vote is your voice" headlines Peter Camejo's address to the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project.
Undocumented immigrants add to the economy In this campaign, I have argued for understanding the reality of what exists in California. Immigrants have been invited here outside of the legal process by offering them jobs that nobody else would take. And in fact when a person comes here, the employer says, "Do you have any relatives?" The families have been here as part of our community, but they're treated like the untouchables in India. Until recently they didn't have the right to a driver's license so they could drive to work or take their children to school. They're here to provide for their family. We should welcome them into our community rather than use them as a scapegoat. It is very peculiar in our society that we call these people illegal. We use this word on them, but absolutely no one, not even Tom McClintock, will say arrest them. That would be destruction for California's economy. Let's change their situation. Immigration is a separate issue. We're talking about the undocumented that are here. ### Environment and economy are one and the same Our planet is dying. Every major ecological system in the world is in decline and we live in denial. 10,000 people die in France. We have this huge blackout on the East Coast. The economy and the environment are one in the same thing. If we don't turn the world around and show leadership in this struggle now, we are destroying the world for our grandchildren. I presented a proposal on how we could turn California into the world leader in solar energy. It would only cost us a billion dollars and $1.5 billion in lines of credit. We have 4 percent left - 4 percent left of our ancient forests. People do not understand the precious things we are destroying that can never be put back. We did not inherit the earth; we have borrowed it. We have a responsibility before time and history of our species and our planet. The last thing is to start cutting back the work for saving our environment. ###
