Green candidates get boost for Nov. 2: President of major Latino political group urges voters to look for ‘Greener pastures'

SACRAMENTO (October 27, 2004) – The president of one of the state's oldest and most prominent Latino political organizations this week urged all Latino voters to vote for Green Party candidates – and to ignore Democratic candidates – in local, state and national elections Nov. 2.

Nativo Lopez, president of the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA), formed nearly 50 years ago in 1960 with chapters throughout California and several other states, said it was time for Latino voters to "look for Greener pastures."

"Throughout the political landscape of the country, it is the Latino vote that is growing faster than any other. These voters are searching for an alternative to the current duopoly - Republican and Democratic - stranglehold on Californian politics," said Lopez.

"There are Greener pastures to our present situation. I recommend voting Green in the upcoming elections. I encourage all Latino voters to support Green Party candidates for local, state, and federal office," said Lopez, who has criticized Democrats as "not helping the Latino community."

Lopez, who re-registered Green recently and has urged all Latino voters to do the same, has heavily criticized the Democratic Party in California for not being responsive to the Latino community.

The Green Party of California has been particularly helpful to Latinos, supporting the drive for immigrant drivers licenses, workplace protections and civil rights for the large state Latino population.
