Adopted 10 Oct 2009 GA Cotati, Sonoma County The meeting minutes record numerous changes on the floor. The final version was adopted by consensus. PROPOSAL – Bylaws Article 2, Purpose SPONSOR: Bylaws SC - On behalf of the Standing Committee/Working Group Cocos and Liaisons PRESENTER: Michael Borenstein; 530.620.6650; PURPOSE: Define a 'purpose' statement for Article 2 of the GPCA bylaws to serve as the internal definition for guiding the goals and activities of the party, it's bylaws and it's affiliated locals. BACKGROUND: Since GPCA's inception until the present, no submission for Article 2 has been adopted. At the Ventura 2006 GA a submission was proposed (Ex. 1), but not adopted. At the two 2008 SC/WG-CC retreats, two additional submissions were brought forward (Ex. 2 & 3). After a period of deliberation the following edit, [a synthesis of Examples 1, 2 & 3, which are noted here, at bottom for reference] is now submitted to this General Assembly for any needed amendment, ratification and submission into GPCA bylaws as GPCA's Article 2 - Statement of Purpose. PROPOSAL: Article 2 - Purpose The Green Party of California is guided by its Platform and the "Ten Key Values" of the Green Movement: Ecological Wisdom; Grassroots Democracy; Social Justice; Nonviolence; Decentralization; Community Based Economics; Feminism; Respect for Diversity; Personal and Global Responsibility; and Sustainability. As the political actualization of California’s Green movement, we provide an electoral alternative to the Democratic and Republican parties, competing directly with these traditionally entrenched parties and others for elected office to advance our values. We commit to engage in the electoral process in order to incorporate our values into the policies, laws and activities of local, state and national government, and into society at large. We act in coalition with other organizations, and we affirm our electoral activities as part of a larger social movement for world-wide peace, democracy, human rights and environmental balance. TIME LINE; Immediate upon GA adoption of final draft. RESOURCES: $ - none Effort/time by Bylaw SC & IT to incorporate final draft onto existing GPCA bylaws.
