Call for Historical Documents
We're currently combing the state for all paper and electronic historical Green Party of California documents and asking for commentary on a variety of topics so that we can create an extensive archival resource for the Green Party of the future.
Please submit your documents for inclusion:
Electronic documents: If you have an electronic version of a document you think should be included, we'd prefer to have it in digital form. Please do not submit the same document electronically and on paper, send us the electronic version if you have one, and if you only have paper, mail us the hardcopy. Do not print out electronic documents and send us the paper copies, as trees are in shorter and shorter supply.
Paper documents: If you have hardcopies of documents you think should be included, we'll need you to mail them to us for sorting and copying.
Don't throw it out! Please contact
to arrange for archiving of your materials.

Preface
The California Green Archives and special collections was formally established in 2000. The archives exists to identify, collect, preserve and make available records of enduring value to green activists, scholars, writers, historians and journalists, and for the future.
Archives will hold any documentary materials relating to the founding and establishment of the Green Committees of Correspondence, the Green Party of California and the wider Green political movement in the USA and beyond
Archives will seek special collections from individuals involved in the founding and early development of the American Green Movement
Archives will survey available collections and contact current and former Green Party activists and campaigns. Transfers and acquisitions will be made in accordance with a written policy statement, supported by adequate resources and only when consistent with the mission of the archives.
Along with any volunteers, I will provide accessioning, preservation, description and management of the collection
Introduction
The California Green Archives were founded by Hank Chapot to collect and preserve documents from the early efforts to establish the Green Movement in California. In 1991, I volunteered to save paper documents and related ephemera. I began to save everything I could find as the Greens grew from the Committees of Correspondence to the Green Party of California. As an Activist in the San Francisco Bay Area, I had access to traveling Greens from other states and nations, and I was an early participant in the effort to establish a National Green Party through membership in the Green Politics Network and the Confederation/Association of State Green Parties. Since its formal establishment in the year 2000, I have used two small grants from the Green Network and The GPCA.
There are no restrictions on accessing the materials except that they do not leave the premises, currently my home office in Oakland California.
Organizational History
A few hundred American political and environmental activists motivated by the success of Die Grunen, the German Green Party, founded the Green Committees of Correspondence in 1984. After a few years of meeting, publishing and corresponding, green activists chose to create a national membership organization called the Green Committees of Correspondence. And there followed the establishment of state green parties and finally, the national Green Party of the USA.
